CloudFormation vs CDK vs Terraform—Which IaC tool is right for you?

IaC and the Rise of CloudFormation Since it first came into existence, the cloud has gone through several major evolutions, but one service has remained constant. IaC. IaC has and remains a core implementation solution on AWS. It took away the costly, error-prone manual system of creating infrastructure from scratch and allowed developers to automate the process. And the tool that was used to enable that automation was CloudFormation. Built by AWS for AWS, CloudFormation, which was first released in 2011, allowed developers to write simple template files to build infrastructure as needed to run their web applications. It is still one of the safest ways to create, manage, modify and delete resources in your infrastructure. It enables robust state management, and can, as of date, even let you know how your deployment will run—before you actually deploy. CloudFormation templates included different attributes and configuration values for various resources, all entered in a reusable a...

How secure is your data on AWS—and what can you do about it?

Image
For the eighth year in a row, AWS has been ranked in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant as the No. 1 IaaS provider. This is a clear indicator of the trust companies show in AWS, by migrating to AWS and adopting AWS services. Despite this, most companies, across industry segments have much to learn about AWS best practices for security. Organizations—across industries—should start to address their security concerns, or map them, by answering the following three questions: Who can access my applications and when are they being accessed? How is it possible for us to better monitor key file changes? How can we ensure of being notified in time in the event of an anomalous occurrence? This article looks at the key ways organizations can identify and meet the most common of challenges to AWS security. Beware of Misconfigurations It is common to see organizations give priority to putting tools and controls in place before establishing security strategy. It is far better and more practical to assess a co...

Terraform or CloudFormation, which one is right for you?

The IaC effect Once upon a cloud, users had to provision, configure and deploy all their applications manually. That meant that somewhere a system analyst was drawing up a list of virtual hardware—your infrastructure stack—that would be required to run the application. After this was provisioned and configured, it would be deployed in their hosting environment. If the same application were required to run again in another region, the entire process would have to be repeated. This method was a waste of resources. Further, being manual, the process was susceptible to human errors, and it was expensive. Clearly some way to automate the process was needed. Enter Infrastructure as Code (IaC). IaC in a nutshell IaC is basically a document; a script that spells out the group of actions that an operator would need to carry out manually. e.g. provision servers, load balancers, instal libraries, databases, set up security, etc. to run an application. Like application code, IaC can be run o...

Come for the Cost Savings, Stay for the Productivity: Microsoft Workloads on AWS

One key area of focus for organizations engaged in education, charitable causes or public sector work is cost. And this is often the primary reason they opt to move their Microsoft workloads to Amazon Web Services (AWS). But in the process they also gain from the many improvements AWS offers, via services that support myriads of applications, systems & solutions. Organizations that run customer-facing applications on the AWS Cloud, delivering software solutions, have leveraged AWS to shorten backup times significantly using Microsoft SQL Server on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2). Not only are the backups to the cloud radically faster, they offer equally high cost savings. Organizations also also seeing enhanced application availability in running mission-critical applications. Organizations can also use Amazon EC2 instances for ephemeral storage of SQL Server databases in clusters across various Availability Zones. This ability to cluster across multiple availabilit...

Windows Migration on AWS

Image
Cloud computing is not longer a disruptive new concept. It works, and it is working for millions of enterprises. On-premises infrastructure just cannot compare with a cloud ecosystem—in terms of productivity or cost or security. Nevertheless, when your teams have become comfortable with building and running Windows applications on-premises, the thought of completely revamping your operational model can be daunting. But that fear is not valid. Windows doesn’t just function in the cloud, it is even better than it could be in your on-premises environment. Many thousands of Windows customers have migrated to, and have been running Windows workloads on AWS for years. Customers like Autodesk and Salesforce have thousands of Windows instances running on AWS at any given time. It would not be exaggeration to say that AWS probably has more experience running Windows in the cloud that Microsoft itself. This blog post gives you a quick look at the many benefits you stand to gain in terms of relia...
